You’re a top performer. You keep all the plates spinning and do more in a day than most people do in a week. You’ve read the books, done the therapy, broken the cycles, burned the sage. But, you’re exhausted. Like, the bone tired, soul weary, kind of exhausted. Beyond burned out.
But, everything you try to get back on track – all the tools you’ve used before – seem to be hurting more than their helping. This is your sign that it’s time for a new chapter.
The Power of Story
Storytelling isn’t just for TED Talks and marketers. It’s a deeply human superpower used by impactful leaders the world over. One Harvard Business Review article found that storytelling increased trust in leaders by over 25%. In high-growth environments, that trust becomes rocket fuel.
When we share authentic narratives, they don’t just communicate; they connect, build trust, and unlock resilience.
That’s because storytelling literally rewires the brain. It helps process difficult experiences, reframe unhelpful beliefs, and reignite the sense of meaning that burnout erodes.
How Hamilton Made Me Care About A Bunch Of Dead Guys
Until a few years ago, the only thing I could tell you about Alexander Hamilton was that he was on the ten dollar bill. Then I saw the musical Hamilton.
Lin-Manuel Miranda didn’t just present history—he cracked open humanity. I watched an abstract narrative come alive in front of me. Even without catching every word of dialogue, I understood what was being communicated – and I leaned in, captivated.
I left the theatre hungry to learn more, googling more about his life and watching documentaries. That’s what good stories do. They make us care. They connect us to our curiosity and creativity. They give us access to energy we didn’t know we had.
Check Your Narrative: Is It Fueling or Draining You?
Your internal narrative shapes every decision you make—especially under pressure. But too often, we operate on outdated scripts:
- “If I stop pushing, it all falls apart.”
- “People won’t respect me if I’m vulnerable.”
- “We don’t have time to slow down and connect.”
Sound familiar? These stories come from decades of survival. At some point in your life, they were probably true. But then, you did the incredibly hard, complex, and heroic work of healing. You broke cycles. You created a new life and even created some success.
Now, those old narratives aren’t helping you anymore. They’re actually hurting you. They’re keeping you reactive, burned out, and disconnected. It’s time for a rewrite.
Leadership Practices to Rewrite Your Story
- Audit your narrative. What are the core stories you tell about yourself, your skills, your life? Are they all still true? Which no longer serve you?
- Listen for friction. Where does your story create stress or dissonance? Maybe you used to be bad at math, but now you close million dollar deals. That reality check – that’s your invitation to revise.
- Explore other inspiring stories. Pick a historical figure, colleague, or mentor you admire. Learn their story. Ask them questions about their journey. Retell it in your words. What excites you about it? Are there any parallels in your own life?
- Rewrite the script. What are you assuming about your potential, your limits, or needs? What’s just simply not true anymore. What new narrative could unleash better performance, more alignment, and the life you actually WANT to be living?
This isn’t fluff. This is strategy.
Tell the Truth
Once your stories are aligned with who you really are—not just who you think you’re supposed to be—share them, even if just with yourself. Write them on the bathroom mirror, create a blog, incorporate story into your next leadership meeting. Start telling your new stories – based in the authentic reality of now, not the program of the past – and watch everything shift.
You’ll build trust, interest, and engagement organically. And you’ll start living from a place of clarity and congruence, instead of a coping strategy.
You don’t need more hard work, hustle, or achievement to get where you want to go. You need a new story.
